STREAM Project Showcased at CIRED 2025 in Geneva

The STREAM project was proudly featured at CIRED 2025, held from 16–19 June 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. CIRED (International Conference on Electricity Distribution) is one of the leading global forums for the electricity distribution community, bringing together researchers, utilities, technology providers, and policy experts to share insights and innovations shaping the future of energy systems.

As part of the conference, a paper titled “Prototyping Innovative Mechanisms for Incentive-Driven Explicit Flexibility in Residential Buildings”, co-authored by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and OptiWatti, presented results from the Finnish pilot of the STREAM project.

The study explored how residential buildings can actively support grid stability by providing explicit, incentive-driven flexibility. In particular, it demonstrated how part of the heating load in homes can be used to participate in Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) markets. The pilot showed that this can be achieved without compromising user comfort, offering new opportunities to integrate households into demand-side flexibility schemes.

STREAM’s contribution highlights the potential of residential demand response as a critical element of the energy transition, particularly as electricity systems become more decentralized and dynamic.
