STREAM Key Takeaways #3 – Lessons from the Finnish Pilot Site

We continue our STREAM Key Takeaways series with new insights from the Finnish pilot site, where the focus was on co-creating flexibility solutions with end-users.

The STREAM team piloted a solution that combines spot-price optimization with participation in TSO balancing markets. The pilot was implemented in collaboration with the service provider OptiWatti, who acted as an aggregator. Importantly, the project involved end-users, residents and building owners, directly in the design and testing of flexibility services.

This user-centered approach ensured that the technical solutions reflected real-world needs, preferences, and comfort levels.

What we’ve learned:

  • Technical and social challenges must be addressed. Compatibility, usability, and fairness are essential for long-term success.
  • Motivation goes beyond cost savings. Users are also driven by environmental concerns and the desire to contribute to the community.
  • Simplicity is essential. Participation models must be clear and interfaces easy to use.
  • Customization is key. Comfort thresholds and willingness to participate vary, requiring flexible solutions.
  • Communication builds trust. Ongoing engagement and transparent reporting help maintain user involvement.
