In the latest episode of the EU Energy Projects Podcast, produced by Enlit Europe, host Jonathan Spencer Jones talks to Tomi Medved, coordinator of the STREAM project, about the challenges of enabling flexibility on the low-voltage (LV) side of the grid.
As decentralised, renewables-based energy systems increasingly rely on flexibility, a key challenge remains: unlocking it on the LV side, where devices like EVs, heat pumps, and residential batteries could participate in markets but currently lack the ecosystem to do so. STREAM’s work addresses this gap, including the development of a “device registry” prototype, recording details of participating devices and their activity, which Medved notes puts the project ahead of an upcoming EU network code expected to require similar systems by 2027–2028.
Piloting has taken place in Finland, Italy, Slovenia, and Spain, covering both technical innovation and market integration aspects of the flexibility ecosystem.
