ENLIT Europe 2024 in Milan brought together over 15,000 energy professionals, researchers, and innovators to explore cutting-edge advancements shaping Europe’s sustainable energy future. Among the highlights was a panel session titled “Rethinking Flexibility Markets: What’s the Secret to Navigating Regulatory Challenges and Customer Needs?” held on October 23rd in the EU Projects Zone Hub. This session brought together key figures from notable EU projects such as STREAM, BeFlexible, and ENFLATE to examine the evolving landscape of flexibility markets in response to regulatory and consumer demands.

The panel discussion offered a comprehensive look at the vital role flexibility markets play in enhancing grid resilience and adaptability. Projects like STREAM, ENFLATE, and BeFlexible were highlighted for their pioneering work in creating solutions that not only align with regulatory frameworks but also prioritize consumer needs. Dr. Tomi Medved, Project Coordinator for STREAM, emphasized the project’s commitment to fostering adaptive, consumer-focused market solutions that bolster a more resilient and flexible energy network.
Medved was joined by panellists, including Katerina Drivakou of UBITECH ENERGY, Fernando David Martín Utrilla of i-DE (Iberdrola Group) and coordinator of the BeFlexible project, and Charles Esser, Secretary General of E.DSO. Together, they discussed the impact of European regulations and evolving energy policies on the restructuring of flexibility markets, emphasizing the need for smart, consumer-oriented grids. The panel, moderated by Susana Garayoa of Zabala Innovation, underscored the value of collaborative EU projects in responding to the energy sector’s evolving challenges.
